What Are The Clubs Needed For a Beginner

Are you determined to start playing golf? Trust me playing golf is going to be one of the best decisions of your life. As a beginner, you may find it a little complicated and there must be a lot of queries. Like, What golf club do I need? Do I need full golf set to get started? Or what clubs should I have in my bag?

In this article, I will try to give you proper guidelines so that you can start this amazing game with confidence.

I still remember when I went to buy golf clubs for the first time I was so confused. Thankfully the shop owner helped me. But I want you to have a clear concept about golf clubs you need to get started.

Do I need a full set of golf clubs?

The answer is No. As a beginner, you need some essential and simple clubs to practice comfortably. You need to pay attention to the quality of clubs and the variety of features.  Because versatility in clubs will help you to practice confidently and play every shot.

What clubs should I have in my bag?

As a beginner, you can start with the following clubs.

  • 3 Wood
  • 4 & 5 Hybrids
  • Mid-range irons like 7, 8 or 9.
  • Pitching and Sand Wedge
  • Putters

Start practicing with these clubs. After developing your skills you can add more clubs according to your requirement.

Woods

Woods are designed to shoot the ball over long distances on the fairway or in the rough. The Woods include driver (1 wood) and fairway woods.

I think 3 wood must be the first choice for a beginner. Its large head and long shaft will support you to swing and develop your accuracy.

Hybrids

Hybrids are the new edition in golf. I love these. They are easy to hit unlike 3, 4 or 5 long irons. They are designed to replace long irons like 3, 4 & 5. You can add 4 & 5 hybrid instead of irons in your bag. They are flexible and easy to hit and obviously more forgiving than irons.

I think as a beginner these will help you a long way to develop your skills and build confidence.

Irons

The next thing you need to pick is an iron set that includes 7 & 9 iron. As you have chosen 4 & 5 hybrids instead of irons you don’t need to think much about long shots.

Here 7 & 9 irons would be a perfect combination for you.  An ideal set of clubs will give you forgiveness as well as a chance to grow your game.

Wedge

There are four types of wedge – pitching wedge, lob wedge, gap wedge and sand wedge. Wedges are high lofted clubs from 45 to 64 degrees. These wedges have different functions. Also, You can read our article about 10 Best Wedges For Beginners.

For example, Pitching wedges are designed to let the player be more consistent and get a maximum spin in every shot. Where Lob wedges are used to play shots over trees or other obstacles.

They are amazing to play with. As a beginner choose a wedge that has added shape to the sole. Consider the weight of the wedge and also your comfort.

I recommend you grab a 44 to 48-degree pitching wedge and a lob wedge between 58 and 60. Once you start playing you will figure out the potentiality of every wedge. Then you can choose wedges according to your requirement and way of playing. Also, you can learn What Wedges Should a Beginner Carry.

Putters

Last but not least putters. The putter is a must for a golfer. Putters come in a wide range of sizes and weights. You don’t need to push yourself much. Just check some of them and choose one that feels comfortable to you.
